Congress Pushes Back Against VA on Pot and PTSD

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 01:08:37 GMT

The nearly decade-long battle to get American veterans access to medical cannabis continued on Capitol Hill this week. With the exception of seeing little kids with extreme forms of epilepsy like Dravet’s Syndrome, nothing went further in changing the national conversation around medical cannabis than supporting vets with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This movement was a direct result of first-hand experiences with medical cannabis safety and efficacy when it came to PTSD, as more veterans continue to take their own lives. In its own 2017 study on cannabis and PTSD, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) noted over one-third of patients seeking cannabis for medical purposes list PTSD as the primary reason for the request, and 15% of VA patients at outpatient clinics are using medical cannabis in the last six months. Cannabis Caucus founder Rep. Earl Blumenauer picked the fight up this week, to get vets access to cannabis. He originally started pushing the effort in 2014. In 2016,...

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 01:08:37 GMT

SANTA CLARA — Friday brought the 49ers’ third practice of training camp, and, most important, it offered a look at how Brock Purdy’s surgically repaired elbow responded on back-to-back days of action. Here is a recap of how he and the other three quarterbacks performed:BROCK PURDYAll 18 first-team snaps went his way, just as all 21 did in Purdy’s practice debut Thursday, meaning that his arm showed no ill effects or required any extra rest in his valiant comeback. His best throw was among his final ones: a 25-yard completion to Deebo Samuel over the middle after Purdy’s play-action methods had him turn his back to the defense, then rotate around to find Samuel. He wrapped up a 6-of-12 passing line with his third completion of the morning to Christian McCaffrey. A day after going 3-of-10 with an interception, Purdy nearly had a pass snagged by nickel back Isaiah Oliver as he converged on tight end Brayden Willis. Purdy’s other completions went to Br...

MARTINEZ — A former Contra Costa Sheriff’s deputy who was fired and charged with five felonies had stockpiled e-signatures of superior court judges on a thumb drive found in his patrol car, according to police testimony at his preliminary hearing Thursday.Matthew Buckley, 42, of Pinole, has been charged with not just stealing two assault rifles from an Antioch resident in 2020, but also with forging documents with two judges’ signatures in an attempt to cover up the thefts. Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 01:08:37 GMT

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — If one thing has stood out in the first couple of days of training camp for the New York Giants, it’s seeing tight end Darren Waller catch passes from Daniel Jones. What has to be exciting for coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is Waller has been wide open on some passes, caught them in traffic and even taken a hit on a goal-line reception. For a team that has lacked a go-to receiver for years, Waller might turn out to be the answer. And the price was not steep. General manager Joe Schoen sent Las Vegas a third-round draft pick in March for a player who is a major headache for opposing defenses when he is healthy. In 2019 and ’20, Waller caught 197 passes combined for 2,341 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Giants had 17 TD catches last season. Waller was slowed by thigh and knee injuries the past two years, but he looks healthy now.“I want to be able to do everything and just present myself as a viable option to the quarterback ...
