CONCORD, N.C. — AJ Allmendinger spoiled NASCAR’s playoffs by winning Sunday’s elimination race on The Roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Allmendinger is fantastic and wasn’t going to move over just because he’s not part of the championship field.Allmendinger, who is in his first full season of his Cup return, led 46 laps for Kaulig Racing to win for the first time in NASCAR’s top series since Indianapolis in 2021. Allmendinger, who became a father within the past month, was sobbing when he collected the checkered flag.“Because you don’t know when you are going to do it again,” cried Allmendinger, who turns 42 in December. He said he normally gives the checkered flag away to a fan but was keeping Sunday’s flag for his newborn son.“That was probably the drive of my life,” he said later.Allmendinger then went into the stands to pose for selfies with the fans chanting his name. It was the third Cup Series win for Allmendinger, who has raced across 16 Cup seasons but took a break f...

The WNBA will soon call the Bay Area home, but where will their fans go?

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 06:13:03 GMT

OAKLAND — If you’re a Golden State Warriors diehard, finding a sports bar packed with likeminded NBA fans is as easy as asking a friend or hopping on Yelp. Not so for the Bay Area’s committed WNBA watchers. The small handful of fans that carved out a corner on the Athletic Club’s second-floor balcony in downtown Oakland Sunday afternoon called several different bars, emailed a few others, scoured Reddit community boards and even scrolled through a queer LGBTQ dating app in their search — desperate for a space to watch the Las Vegas Aces defend their Championship title in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals against the New York Liberty. While Elyse Widin was frustrated that the community was having to organize itself, they were by no means flabbergasted.“I’m used to it,” Widin said, adding that they had to ask bar management to turn on closed captions so they could follow the action through the din of 30 other screens dominated by the NFL. “That’s just how it goes when you’re n...

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Colts aren’t sure how much time, if any, rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson might miss after leaving in the first half of Sunday’s 23-16 victory with a right shoulder injury.Coach Shane Steichen said he didn’t know the extent of the injury immediately following the game. Richardson didn’t speak with reporters and was expected to undergo further evaluation Sunday night. The rookie was injured on a 4-yard run with 4:29 left in the first half when he fell awkwardly to the ground with two Tennessee Titans draped around him. Richardson stayed down for several minutes before walking slowly to the injury tent, his shoulder noticeably drooping to the right side. After several more minutes in the injury tent, he headed to the locker room with the team’s medical staff. It’s the third time this season Richardson has been unable to finish a game he started.“I think when you have a dynamic player like him, and, obviously, one of his s...

Minute Maid Park retractable roof to be open for Game 2 of ALDS between Astros and Twins

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 06:13:03 GMT

HOUSTON (AP) — The retractable roof at Minute Maid Park will be open for Game 2 of the AL Division series between the Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins Sunday night.Houston manager Dusty Baker was asked how much input players and staff had into the decision. “The staff and players, none,” he said. “That’s a league decision.” It will be just the second time this season that the roof will be opened for a game as temperatures in Houston are normally too hot for games to be played with it open. After a brutal summer, temperatures have dipped this week in Houston and it was expected to be 73 degrees at first pitch Sunday night. Baker said that the park plays differently when the roof is open.“The wind comes in and bounces off of this and goes back out to that, similar to the roof playing different with Milwaukee with the panels open or even Arizona when it travels a little different,” he said. “Anytime there’s a circular building, that’s creating kind of a wind tunnel,...

Hundreds have been killed on both sides of the border in fighting that continued Sunday. In Saturday’s early morning assault, a photo shows the smoky trail of rockets from Gaza arcing through the sky against the backdrop of a rising sun. Rockets that struck a parking lot next to a residential building in the Israeli city of Ashkelon torched cars and sent thick black plumes skyward. Israeli security forces used a t...
